Long An Port is built in Can Giuoc District, a commune located at the lower end of Southern East of Long An Province. Since this area is significantly affected by tidal waves and the source of water contains a high salt concentration, residents of the area is struggling with agriculture and fishery. However, situated on the border of Ho Chi Minh City and stretching toward the Mekong Delta and national Road No. 50, the area will be connected with Ben Luc – Long Thanh Highways in the near future. Stretching along the East Coast toward the Soai Rap River and with a sea routes connecting to other provinces in the south, Long An International Port will be connected to Long An Port Industrial Zone which was developed on nearly 2,000 hectares. This is a tremendous advantage for the port’s economic development.
In addition, an increasing demand for a faster sea transportation stemming from the rapid growth in import and export of primary goods in agricultural and industrial sectors in Long An province, industrial zones inside Long An Port, the commercial center and the new urban area project and supporting the transportation of goods from the port Group No.5 are contributing to the social and economic development of Long An Province, a primary economic hub in the Southern region and Mekong River Delta.
Additionally, the outstanding advantages of Long An Province’s strategic geographical location, water levels, vessel movement and sea and road traffic routes in the Can Giuoc District – Long An Province illustrates the necessity of Long An Port development. It allows full realization of the province’s potential as a cargo transportation hub on the Soai Rap River which was dredged to facilitate traffic from 21 June 2014. The hub directly reduced the inventory level at port and annual transportation costs of delivering imports and exports to other ports in Ho Chi Minh City by road or domestic vessels. In addition, after completion and under full operation, the port will help reduce road traffic flow to Ho Chi Minh City, lessen traffic jams caused by the thousands of trucks transporting goods to other ports in Ho Chi Minh City.
