On August 8, 2023, at Long An International Port, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the People’s Council Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc, together with department leaders of Long An Province and leaders of Dongtam Group welcomed the delegation of officials and large enterprises from the State of California (USA) led by Oakland City Mayor Sheng Thao. On this occasion, a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony took place between Long An International Port (Vietnam) and Port of Oakland (California, USA).

Attending the event on behalf of the leaders of Long An Province were Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc, Member of the Central Committee of the Party, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Chairman of the People’s Council; Mr. Mai Van Nhieu – Vice Chairman of the People’s Council of Long An Province; Mr. Nguyen Minh Lam – Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Long An Province; together with officials and leaders of departments and branches of Long An Province. The delegation of officials and large enterprises from the State of California was composed of the Bay Area Council (San Francisco) and the Vietnamese American Business Association (VABA) led by Oakland City Mayor Sheng Thao. Welcoming the delegates to the port were Mr. Vo Quoc Thang, Chairman of Dongtam Group, and leaders of Dongtam Group and Long An International Port.

Long An Province is located in the Southern part of Vietnam, it is an important gateway connecting Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region with the Mekong Delta. Thanks to this strategic location, Long An easily resonates with the spread of industrial and urban development of Ho Chi Minh City. In addition, Long An Province also has advantages in waterway transportation, has a large-scale seaport and river ports, and has a joint border with Cambodia spanning about 134 kms in length through the Binh Hiep International Border Gate located in Kien Tuong Town and My Quy Tay National Border Gate in Duc Hue District resulting to great potential in border trade development.

The United States is ranked 6th among approximately 40 countries and territories investing in Long An, with 23 projects having a total registered investment capital of over 484 million USD (accounting for 4.6% of FDI capital into the province). The US projects in Long An mainly operate in the fields of environment, packaging production, pharmaceuticals, toys, apparel, and factory leasing.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nguyen Van Duoc – Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People’s Council of Long An Province said: “Long An Province is truly honored to welcome the delegation, this shows the trust and confidence of our US friends in us as a safe investment business destination. I hope that after learning about the initial implementation of activities in the field of environment, there will be a good foundation for Long An Province and Oakland City, California to open up and expand areas of cooperation in the very near future”.

According to the signed memorandum of understanding, Long An International Port and Port of Oakland will closely cooperate in the fields of port operations, including: (1) Sharing of experiences in port management and operations; (2) Cooperation to strengthen ties in order to develop the market and increase the volume of transshipment goods between Long An International Port and the Port of Oakland; (3) Supporting parties to connect Import-Export Enterprises, thereby enhancing trade relations between enterprises in Long An Province and California in particular, and between Vietnamese and US enterprises altogether. Following the signing ceremony, the two sides will plan to promote business activities and send delegations back and forth to implement the agreed commitments. The Port of Oakland’s support projects for Long An International Port will be discussed and implemented by the two parties in the coming time.

Port of Oakland in the state of California, USA is one of the largest international ports in the world. This cooperation agreement aims to contribute to improvements in the operations and handling capacity at Long An International Port. Long An International Port is currently one of the largest ports in Vietnam, invested by Dongtam Group. The port has an area of 147 hectares and officially connected its 7 berths on June 24, 2023, with a continuous berth length of 1,670m. In the next phase of development, Long An International Port will carry out procedures to expand its scale to 9 berths. When completed, Long An International Port will have a continuous berth length of 2,368m and will have the longest continuous berth length in Vietnam, receiving ships of up to 100,000 DWT with an operating capacity of 3,000,000 TEU.

On the occasion of the visit at Long An International Port, the delegation had a meeting and exchange with leaders of Ministries and Departments of Long An Province, representatives and leaders of the Business Association of Long An Province, and leaders of Dongtam Group and Long An International Port. The delegation toured Long An International Port’s facilities and surrounding areas such as its berths, warehouse system, industrial park, industrial service area, urban area, and the tallest flagpole in Indochina.
